Primoš Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) said he is far from his top level, but showed no signs of concern after the Criterium du Dauphiné stage 4 time trial.
The Olympic time trial champion finished fifth, 42 seconds behind stage winner Filippo Ganna, in La Batie d'Orphe over 31.9 km of mostly flat terrain.
He was, however, the strongest overall contender prior to the race, finishing about 30 seconds ahead of his runner-up teammate, Jonas Vingegaard.
"It's going well. But this is the kind of thing you need to do to improve. 'Mentally I'm good. I'm happy with my performance and I really pushed myself.
The three-time Vuelta a España winner has his sights set on the Tour de France in three weeks. Although he always seems to be in good form, this will be his first time competing in the race since early April.
So despite his popularity at the Dauphiné, he is looking for signs of things going well
for the start of the Tour in Copenhagen on July 1. But these things help me and are part of my preparation for the Tour."
Roglic is currently third overall in the Dauphiné, 56 seconds behind teammate Wout Van Aert, but 30 seconds ahead of the rest of the field and over 40 seconds ahead of everyone but his teammates.
The race continues on Thursday with a flat stage north of Lyon, followed by a mountain stage in the Gap on Friday before heading into the Alps.
