Ride London Classic, live broadcasts restricted and World Tour status revoked

The UCI temporarily reclassified the Ride London Classique as a Pro Series because the tournament organizers did not provide the required live TV coverage for each stage, only the final stage.

The Ride London Classic has been part of the Women's World Tour since the tournament's inception in 2016, with the exception of the cancellation of the 2020 event.

Lorena Wiebes (Team DSM) won all three stages and the overall, but only her victory on the final day, which took place in circuit races around London, was broadcast live.

UCI regulations require a minimum of 45 minutes of live coverage per day in order to be considered part of the World Tour. The organizers' failure to provide this was "an unacceptable lack of respect for the teams and riders participating in the event," the UCI said in a statement.

As a result, the RideLondon Classic's status as a World Tour race for the 2023 season will be contingent on "the provision of a commitment regarding live television coverage of all stages." A final decision on the race will be made in September.

Last season, the Giro Rosa became a Pro Series race after organizers failed to provide live coverage in 2020; when the peloton departs Sardinia at the end of June, it will return to the World Tour with the promise of extended live coverage.

Britain's other premier women's race, the Women's Tour, was also in danger of suffering a similar fate earlier this month when it announced that it would not be able to offer live coverage in 2021 and would have difficulty securing sponsors to fund live images this year. However, five days before the race, they confirmed that they would provide a live stream of the event.

"Daily live coverage of UCI Women's World Tour events, including the most prestigious race in women's professional road cycling, is fundamental to ensuring its continued international development," the UCI statement added.
