Michal Valgren crashed on the final stage of the Route de Occitanie on Sunday, forcing the Danish rider to miss the start of the Tour de France in Copenhagen.
EF Education-Easy Post initially announced that Valgren had been taken to the hospital to check on his injuries, but the extent of the damage was confirmed late Sunday.
"Michal Valgren suffered a dislocated hip, pelvic fracture, and possible knee injury at the Route d'Occitanie today. He will be transferred to Monaco where he will undergo surgery within the next week."
"Join us in wishing Michael a speedy recovery."
However, no matter how fast his recovery is, he will not be able to make it in time for the Tour de France Grand Depart in a week and a half.
This will be the first time the 30-year-old will miss the Tour de France since 2014, and the first time in the year it opens in his home country. Even before the medical update was announced, TV 2 Sport reported that Matti Breschel, sports director of EF Education Easy Post, had confirmed that he would not be able to start the Tour de France.
Valgren made a late attack on the second stage at Route d'Occitanie, a 33-km heatwave-shortened stage, finishing second behind Roger AdriĆ (Cologne Pharma). It was Valgren's first podium of the season, but this came after a strong finish in 2021. His first win since 2018, when he won the Amstel Gold and Omloop Het Niusblad at the Giro della Toscana in September 2021, was immediately followed by a win at the Coppa Sabatini and a further two-year extension of his contract with EF-Education. Bargren followed that up with a third-place finish at the Road World Championships in Flanders.
