Pinarello's New "Bolide" Time Trial Bike Breaks in Tour de Suisse

As rumored prior to Filippo Ganna's world time record attempt, Pinarello is working on a new time trial bike, the first major update to the Bolide TT in nearly a decade.

After being spotted on social media last week, it was not the Italian time trial world champion who broke cover on the new bike, but his teammates Geraint Thomas and Dani Martinez. Thomas, who finished second in the stage and took the overall win, is pictured above.

The Bolide TT was originally launched in 2013 and has had only minor improvements in the nine years since. Product cycles for time trial bikes are often long, but the industry is moving fast, with aerodynamic understanding and a shift to disc brakes, even though the current model has been on the podium at two world championships, five stages of the Giro d'Italia, and numerous other races under Ganna in the past two years alone Despite this, the Bolide TT was due for a refresh.

Compared to the previous Bolide TT, there is no doubt that this new bike is a total redesign. The main change is from rim brakes to disc brakes, which is hardly unexpected given that this has been the trend in recent years, but a noteworthy decision given that the previous model did not support discs.

Pinarello employed a tactic on the frame that is common in the world of testing unreleased vehicles. This is the application of a black and white camouflage wrap to the bodywork (in this case, frame, fork, seat post, and wheels) as a means of distorting the design, shape, and contours from prying eyes and spy photographers (i.e., us). Cleverly, this camouflage is made up of a series of black and white "Bolide" letters that have the effect of sticker bombs. The camouflage was also unmistakably lacking in subtlety, making it clear to the onlooker that this was indeed a new bike.

Fortunately, despite the camouflage wrapping, Pinarello does not seem to have deviated too far from the already announced playbook known as the Dogma F.

The bike is a bit more modern than the Dogma F, but it still looks like it is a new bike. The down tube junction appears deeper, and there is a bump in the down tube so that the frame wraps around the front wheel.

The head tube and fork legs are also deeper than on the previous Bolide and Dogma F, and the switch to disc brakes has eliminated the rim brake covers that used to be mounted on the front of the head tube.

Interestingly, Thomas and Martinez's wheels were also wrapped in sticker bomb camo. Based on the shape of the wave, the front wheel appears to be a Princeton Carbon Works Mach 7580, while the rear wheel is a Blur 633 from the same brand.

Pinarello has not yet announced a release date for this new bike, so pricing and availability are unknown, but with the Tour de France just a few weeks away, it would be surprising if it is not released at that time.
