Trek Segafredo announced that it has renewed the contract of 2021 Milan-San Remo winner Jasper Steuben. The 30-year-old Belgian has been with the team since 2014, when he turned professional on the World Tour straight from Axel Merckx's development team ...
Stuyven has played an important role in Trek-Segafredo's Classics team, not only in Milan-San Remo (where he defeated winners such as Wout van Ael, Mathieu Van der Pol and Julien Alaphilippe), Omloop Het Nieuwsblad (2020), but also in the Krune-Brussel-Coulomb (2016).
Stuyven, the 2015 Vuelta a EspaƱa stage winner, is a notable stage hunter who came close to winning the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France from a breakaway or small group sprint.
Luca Guercilena, manager of Trek-Segafredo, has suggested that Stuyven will be in contention for a stage win at the Tour de France, which starts July 1 in Copenhagen.
"A stage win at the Tour de France has always been a big goal for him and he has come very close several times. We look forward to seeing Jasper fight for another stage win in a few weeks," Guercilena said in a team press release.
Steuben won the junior world championship in 2009 at the age of 17, ahead of Arnaud Demare and Marco Haller, and in 2010 he won the junior version of Paris-Roubaix. After two seasons with Merckx's Bontrager team, Steuben quickly moved up to the World Tour with Trek-Segafredo. His first professional win was a big one, winning a reduced group sprint on stage 8 of the 2015 Vuelta.
"Jasper is an important rider for the team, he motivates the riders around him," Guercilena said. He has always been a strong rider, but he has matured and learned what it means to lead a team and the responsibility it brings."
Stuyven missed the defense of his Milano-Sanremo title this year due to illness and narrowly missed the podium in Ghent-Wevelgem. He and Bauke Mollema will remain with Trek-Segafredo for the long haul.
"Over the next three years, I want to continue to create an environment where everyone on the team feels welcome, appreciated, and gets the maximum satisfaction from their work.
"Combine that with a team that races as one and enjoys being on the road together, and we will be able to share more beautiful moments and victories in the years to come."
