The U.S. Marshals Service Lone Star Fugitive Task Force has located a black Jeep Grand Cherokee believed to belong to murder suspect Caitlin Marie Armstrong in connection with the death of cyclist Moriah Wilson.
Armstrong is wanted for felony first-degree murder in connection with the May 11 shooting death of Wilson in Austin, Texas.
Task force investigators learned that Armstrong sold the vehicle to a CarMax dealer in south Austin on May 13 for US$12,200. Armstrong received a check from the dealer the day after he was questioned by Austin authorities. According to an official statement sent to Cycling News, she left the Austin airport on May 14.
According to several warrants under investigation, a black Jeep believed to belong to Armstrong was seen on surveillance video driving near the residence where Wilson was staying in Austin the night she was shot and then slowing down.
The following day, Austin Police Department (APD) officers conducted surveillance at Armstrong's residence and observed Armstrong entering and exiting what appeared to be the same vehicle observed on surveillance video at the crime scene.
A search by authorities has to date failed to locate that vehicle again.
U.S. Marshals are assisting APD's homicide investigation with another fugitive investigation in their search for Armstrong.
They have elevated the case to a "major case" and are offering a reward of up to $5,000 in addition to a $1,000 cash reward by Capital Area Crime Stoppers for information leading to Armstrong's arrest.
In addition, an anonymous donor has contributed up to $15,000, for a combined maximum reward of $21,000.
According to recent information from the marshals, Armstrong was at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on May 14, three days after the Wilson shooting. They believe she then boarded a flight to Houston Hobby Airport and later connected to a flight to LaGuardia Airport in New York.
They suggest that she was dropped off at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey on May 18, the day after APD obtained a warrant for her arrest. However, a check of outbound flights at this airport revealed that she was not booked under the name Caitlin Marie Armstrong.
The arrest warrant named Armstrong, 34, who is wanted for first-degree felony murder, and described her as a white female with no other aliases. The marshal also describes Armstrong as 5'8″ tall, weighing around 125 pounds, with long light brown curly hair and hazel eyes.
Cyclingnews has compiled a timeline of how authorities believe this crime unfolded, based on legal documents. Cyclingnews will provide additional information as more information becomes available to authorities through this investigation.
