David Gaudou still had a season and a half left on his contract, but ahead of the Tour de France, the French team announced that it would add two more years, signing the 25-year-old until the end of 2025.
Once Thibaut Pinot's domestique, Gaudou has spearheaded the Tour de France GC challenge with his compatriot; in 2021, Pinot's absence allowed him to take the start of the Grand Tour for the first time, finishing 11th overall.
"There was a shared desire to continue," team manager Marc Madiot said in a statement about the extension." We have established ourselves for the long term and are moving forward together."
"It's very important that we retain our leaders and riders. We are a team that is in it for the long haul. We want David to shine in the overall rankings and establish himself at the top of the world hierarchy. David has affirmed himself and is now a strong anchor for the team."Crashes and illnesses had a major impact on Gaud's spring. However, he took a stage win at the Criterium du Dauphiné, and his overall ranking plummeted from 6th to 17th on the final day.
"There were some difficult times early in the season, but I always felt the support of the team and my sponsors," he said. 'The team is doing everything possible to help us. I also want to highlight all the research and development that has been done to help us progress."
"We are very proud of the work that has been done.
"When you join Groupama-FDJ, chemistry happens.
Gaudo joined the team in August 2016 and has lined up every year since his first Tour de France appearance in 2018. He has also competed once in the Vuelta a España in 2020, winning two stages and finishing eighth overall.
The last contract extensions for French riders also took place before the Tour de France, with the team announcing in June 2020 that it had secured Pinot, Gaudou, Arnaud Demaret, and Stephane Cung until the end of 2023. The announcement adds two more years, meaning Pino will be with the team for at least nine seasons.
"I can't imagine racing under any other color. I was part of the FDJ foundation, but in 2017 I turned pro, and in 2018 Groupama took us to a new step, and in six years we've already shared so much."
