UCI Eliminates Gearing Restrictions for Junior Racers

The UCI has decided to abolish the gear ratio limit for junior races, sweeping away a regulation that limited junior men and women to a set maximum gear ratio.

Previously, UCI Regulation 2.2023 stated, "The maximum gear ratio permitted is the gear ratio that results in a distance travelled per pedal revolution of 7.93 meters.

This measurement restricted junior riders to gearing such as 51/52x14 or 53x15, while 17- and 18-year-old riders were now free to choose "adult" gearing such as 53x11.

Both explanations were often criticized by junior-level race participants who would experience the high-speed, high-torque hill climbing scene in the peloton.

Prior to the junior races, officials would check athletes' gear using the "roll-out method" or "junior roll-out."

A letter sent by the UCI to national federations officially explained the reasons for the elimination of junior gear: "In addition to medical evidence that no longer supports the current restrictions, the availability of equipment required for junior gear is limited. Few bikes on the market meet the previous gear requirements without modifications that would impose extra costs on the rider.

The elimination of the regulation will take effect on January 1, 2023, making the UCI World Championships road race and time trial in Australia the last races for junior racers using the regulated gearing.

In addition to the rule changes, the UCI also announced several regulation updates, including relaxed position and height thresholds for time trials.
