Canyon-Slam heads into the Giro d'Italia Donne with four top-10 finishers, including Elise Chaby, who led the team last year.
Last year, Chaby was in fifth place overall heading into the grueling second and final stage, which finished on the steep slopes of Mount Matadour. That day, she was unable to match the pace of her main GC challengers, dropping six places in the overall standings, but a third place finish on the lumpy final stage put her back in the top 10.
This year, however, the versatile 29-year-old will tackle three tough, climbing-heavy days in a row after entering the Alps on stage 7. He has achieved remarkable results in the Alps this season. These include mountain prizes in the Women's Tour and Itzria Women, and sixth place in the Mont Ventoux-Denivelle Challenge earlier this month.
"Physically and mentally I have improved a lot and I go into the Giro in better shape than I was in 2021. Unfortunately, I had a bit of a health scare last week and wasn't 100% at the All-Japan Championships, but I'm back on track now."
"We have a strong team, so we will see how everyone feels after a few stages. Personally, I want to take my chances from the breakaway and go for the stage win, the long climbs for GC are not my genuine strength, but I am improving in that area as well and I proved I can climb in the Mont Ventoux-Denivelle Challenge."
"I've been working hard to get back into the top 10 and I'm looking forward to the next stage.
Joining Chaby at the start line in Canyon-Slam on June 30 will be Alena Amialiushik. This will be the 10th time she has attempted the women's longest stage race, with two top-10 finishes overall; Soraya Paladin, whose best finish was 9th overall in 2019, will be competing for the ninth time, while Mikayla Harvey, the 2020 youth class winner and 5th on GC, will be competing for the fourth time.
The team also includes experienced sprinter Sarah Roy, who is a contender for four stages for the fast finishers: stages 2 and 3 in Sardinia, stage 5 to Reggio Emilia, and the final day to Padua. Neve Bradbury is the 2020 Zwift Academy winner and a member in her second season with the team.
"The Giro Donne was not in my program at the beginning of the season, but it was a goal. The 20-year-old Australian, who finished 11th overall in the Tour de Suisse women's race, said, "The Giro Donne was not in my program at the beginning. "I am a 20-year-old Australian who finished 11th overall in the Tour de Suisse women's race. My goal is to focus on recovery outside of the race. This is my longest stage race so I want to be able to support my teammates as much as possible." Kasia Nieviadoma, who finished second overall in 2020 and has been the team's favorite to win in the past, will miss her second year racing in Italy. With the Tour de France Femme starting just two weeks after the Giro Donne ends on July 10, many riders who in previous years have focused on the Giro Donne will skip the event this year.
