Van Hulten announces retirement at the end of the 2023 season.

Annemieke van Fruten revealed Wednesday that she will end her long career with her current team, Movistar, at the end of 2023.

The current world number one, who turned pro in 2008, revealed the news after announcing that she will extend her contract with the Spanish team through its final year.

Van Vleuten also has three world championship titles, an Olympic time trial victory, and two Tour de Flanders wins under her belt.

The 39-year-old Van Vleuten, who won his second Liege-Bastogne-Liege race in April and said he had his "best spring campaign ever," will soon compete in the Giro d'Italia Donne. He will then head to the Tour de France Femme at the end of July.

"I never imagined I would retire this year. [In my mind, the best way to retire is when you are still at the top and fighting for wins in the big races.

"I want to stop while I'm still at the top, and it's best to stop when I'm with this great team."

After winning the Olympic time trial title in Japan, Van Vleuten said people will wonder why he quit before the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

However, she said her career was never based on achieving a specific goal, but was directed toward finding a long-term project that would be motivating to her.

"The main reason for retiring in 2023, as I have explained, is to retire while I am in good physical condition, to complete the process of improvement that I started when I signed with this team [Movistar] in 2021, and then to look into whatever challenges I may face in my personal life."

"Why?

"Some may wonder why I am retiring before the Paris Olympics. For me, this career is about finding a long-term project that will always motivate me, like the Movistar team and all the organizations I have been a part of, so I can put my energy into it. It's never about a specific goal or race."

"It doesn't look like there will be an Alpe d'Huez on the course in 2024," she added jokingly. 'But as you can see, that's not the most important reason.'
