Marianne Vos' victory at the Giro d'Italia Donne on Saturday was not only her 31st stage win, but also the Jumbo-Visma rider continues to break more of that dreaded record.
The 35-year-old started the 2022 season later than most to allow time for recovery after winning her eighth cyclocross world title in January. Then, just as she was getting ready for an important season goal, the Paris-Roubaix Femme in April, she tested positive for COVID-19. He raced only three days in the spring, and after his return, he raced only two days in May and June: the classic race Veenendaal-Veenendaal and the Dutch National Championships.
Vos said in an interview in May that he had no signs of illness when he tested positive in Paris-Roubaix, but "after that I had some symptoms: a sore throat and a persistent cold. But it was prolonged. The moment I started cycling again, I noticed that it really affected me, especially with regard to my endurance."
After his recovery, Vos spent some time training at altitude, and at the Giro Donne he managed to regain his form from earlier in the year.
Despite the lack of racing days, she finished second in Friday's second stage behind Elisa Balsamo (Trek-Segafredo) and ahead of Charlotte Cour (Team DSM). On Saturday's stage, Vos upset Balsamo and Kool, who are more than 10 years her junior, to claim her 31st Giro Donne victory.
Vos' 11 stage wins at the Giro Donne are due to her enduring dominance. She won three stages in last year's race, bringing her total to 30 victories. Vos' total number of victories in cyclocross, road, track, and mountain biking exceeds 200, meaning that she is consistently labeled the "GOAT" (strongest ever).
Vos' strong showing in the Giro puts her in a good position to start a new record in the Tour de France femme, where she and her Jumbo-Visma teammates will be competing for stage wins.
Vos has already won the first La Course in 2014 on the Champs-Elysées, where the first stage of the Tour de France femme takes place, and will be looking to repeat that feat.
However, she will be competing against Cool's teammate Lorena Wiebes, the fastest sprinter in the women's peloton, so she may have to go for some punchy stages.
Despite her many victories in the Giro Donne, Vos is equally happy with every win and will have an extra day to soak up these wins as the race progresses from the three opening stages in Sardinia.
"I'm going to the mainland now and I have my first rest day, so I'm going to enjoy that first and enjoy this victory.
