Caitlin Armstrong remanded to Austin jail; bail set at $3.5 million

Authorities turned murder suspect Caitlin Marie Armstrong over from the Harris County Detention Center in Houston to the Travis County Jail in Austin, Texas, on Tuesday, July 5. Armstrong is being held on $3.5 million bond, the Austin Police Department confirmed in a statement sent to Cycling News.

APD confirmed that Armstrong was arrested on a first-degree murder felony charge in connection with the May 11 shooting death of Moriah Wilson in Austin (opens in new tab). Authorities also arrested her for theft of services.

"On July 5, 2022, Caitlin Marie Armstrong was booked into the Travis County Detention Center on charges of murder, first degree felony, and theft of services. She is currently being held on $3.5 million bond on the murder charge. Bail for theft of services is $3,500," APD stated.

A 43-day fugitive search led by the U.S. Marshalls Lone Star Fugitive Task Force located and arrested Armstrong, who was hiding under a false name at a hostel in Santa Teresa Beach, Puntarenas, Costa Rica, on June 29.

Authorities confirmed that on May 18, the day after APD obtained a warrant for her arrest in connection with a murder investigation, Armstrong fled the United States from Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey using someone else's passport fraudulently.

Inside Edition reported that after Armstrong's arrest, two passports were found in a locker at a Santa Teresa Beach hostel, one belonging to Armstrong and the other to a family member. A $6,350 receipt for cosmetic surgery was also found in the locker under a different name.

Authorities confirmed that Armstrong had altered his appearance by cutting his hair and changing his hair color to dark brown. [To avoid this, ABC13 Houston shot exclusive video footage (opens in new tab) of authorities escorting a handcuffed Armstrong at George Bush Intercontinental Houston Airport (IAH). She wore a COVID-19 face mask, kept her head down, and did not answer questions about her involvement in the murder investigation.

Upon entering the United States, Armstrong was first detained at the Harris County Detention Center in the Houston area while awaiting extradition to Austin.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Brandon Fila confirmed at a press conference last week that Armstrong is charged with first-degree murder on a murder investigation arrest warrant with APD for Wilson's death, along with a federal warrant for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

Phila also confirmed that no other persons have been taken into custody in the authorities' pursuit of Armstrong at this time.
