Primoš Roglic's Tour de France challenge suffered a major setback when he lost more than two minutes to Tadej Pogachar on the cobbled fifth stage to Arenberg. The Slovenian crashed before the fifth sector with just over 30km to go and suffered a dislocated shoulder.
Jumbo Visma suffered a crash and a puncture, but Wout Van Aert defended his yellow by 13 seconds from Nielson Powles (EF Education-Easy Post) after a hard chase in the closing stages, and Jonas Vingegaard, despite an unlucky puncture and three bike changes Despite this, he managed to keep the gap to Pogachar at 13 seconds.
Roglic, in 44th place, 2:36 behind Van Aert and 2:17 behind Pogachar, suffered a series of crashes at the roundabout with 30 km to go.
The Slovenian confirmed that he dislocated his shoulder in the fall and emerged from the Jumbo Visma team bus 45 minutes after the stage ended to give interviews to the waiting press as the other teams departed for their hotels.
"Luckily, I'm still here. I couldn't see well, but I think the motor touched the protection and slid into the middle of the road," Roglic told the media, including Cycling News. 9]
"I couldn't get [my shoulder] back on the road, so I had to sit in the spectator's chair to get it back."
"I was able to get back on the road," he said.
Van Aert was the first of the Jumbo Visma racers to fall into difficulty on Wednesday, crashing before the race entered the cobblestones. He was already caught in a split at the head of the cobbled peloton when he suffered a puncture with 36 km to go and was called to wait for his teammate Vinge goal, who had lost a place.
The Dane made no less than three bike changes to further reduce his time. First he switched to Nathan Van Hooydonk's bike, but he could not even sit in the saddle due to the difference in their physiques. He then switched briefly to Steven Kruijswijk's machine, but eventually Jumbo-Visma's team car brought his spare machine.
Vingegaard is now in seventh place overall, 40 seconds behind.
"I hit another rider and my chain got stuck. It got stuck. In hindsight, I probably should have stopped and taken the chain off, but it was a bike race and I was stressed. But it's a bike race and it was stressful, and I only lost 15 seconds, so I guess I have to be happy considering the situation at one point," said Wingegaard after the warm-down.
"Of course I was stressed and nervous. But I wouldn't say it all went down the drain."
At the same time, Roglic, who was safely at the head of the decreasing peloton through the early cobbled sections, was also facing difficulties. The Slovenian crashed out of the Tadej Pogachar group just before the fifth sector with 30km to go, and he was left to continue his lonely chase.
"There were so many crashes and problems today, it was not planned. That's life. Wout crashed early in the race. A few minutes later Primoz crashed. It was too much bad luck," said Niermann Sportif.
"I've seen this stage four times, you need luck and today we didn't have it.
Van Aert and Christophe Laporte led the chase at Vingegaard and took advantage of the situation at Ineos Grenadiers.
Vingegaard caught up with the majority of the GC contenders before the finish, but in the meantime, he was 13 seconds ahead of Pogachar, who had broken away from the winner's group.
Further back, Van Hooydonk and Tiesj Benoot were chasing, but by the time Arenberg finished, he was 2:59 behind stage winner Simon Clark (Israel Premier Tech) and 2:08 behind Pogachar.
"It wasn't the day I wanted," said Clark. Yesterday I had to fight at the front, today I had to fight at the back. But you have to overcome days like today. Especially with Jonas, we are in good shape for the GC. I am proud of everyone. I will keep fighting."
