Bad luck and crashes in the first two stages forced Bike Exchange Jayco to reassess its goals in the Tour de France Women's Zwift. The Australian team was eliminated from overall contention after Kristen Faulkner and Amanda Spratt crashed for the second day in a row in Provins.
Spratt suffered the brunt of the crash on stage 2, and BikeExchange-Jayco confirmed in a medical update that she has no broken bones, but will decide Wednesday morning if she will start stage 3.
"Amanda was involved in a crash today at the Tour de France Fam Avec Zwift. She managed to finish the race, but as she crossed the finish line she felt great pain in her right ribs, right knee and wrist," said team doctor Damien Bertrand. [She decided to go to the hospital for X-rays and a CT scan, but fortunately there were no broken bones. We will therefore evaluate her situation tomorrow morning to determine if she is fit to race."
Faulkner, who entered the race as GC leader, also fell for the second day in a row, crossing the finish line in Provins 3:48 behind with a bloody leg injury and now sits in 92nd place overall, 4:04 behind.
CyclingNews spoke with Alex Manley at the finish of stage 2.
"I was involved in a couple of small crashes today that left me pretty disjointed. Eventually Kristen [Faulkner] and Urschka [Ziegert] tried to bring her back, but there was another crash in the formation. We still have some fight left in us and I'm sure we'll bounce back in good shape."
Manly noted that while the overall standings were out of reach in the mountain stages at the end of the race, Ruby Roseman-Gannon was only 50 seconds behind overall leader Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma) and had a chance to move up in the puncher stages ahead.
"Ruby still has good times. We don't know what the team plan will be, we just have to review it."
Manley is optimistic that Bike Exchange Jayco can do well in the last six stages.
"We were a little unlucky. But today was a little bad for us. We still have six days to go, so we'll be fine," she said.
