Tadei Pogacar to miss Vuelta a España

Tadej Pogachal and the UAE Team Emirates team have put an end to questions about the Slovenian athletes competing in the Vuelta a España and will not compete in a second Grand Tour in 2022, but will concentrate on the One Day Classic series and the World Championships in Australia. He clarified that he will concentrate on the One Day Classic series and the World Championships in Australia.

The Vuelta a España was included in Pogachar's race program this year by the team management of UAE Team Emirates.

After finishing second behind Jonas Vingegaard in the Tour de France, Pogachar and UAE Team Emirates said they would take a few days to decide on his race program.

A post-Tour meeting was held in Paris on Monday, where the team announced that Pogachar would race the Classics instead of the three-week Vuelta a España, which starts Friday, August 19.

According to UAE Team Emirates, Pogachar will compete in the Donostia San Sebastian Classicoa on Saturday, July 30.

After competing in the Spanish One-Day Classic, Pogachar will take a four-week break before returning to racing at the GP Plouay in northern France. He will then travel to North America for the Grand Prix Cycliste de Quebec and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montreal.

From Canada, he will head to Australia for the World Championships (September 19-25). Pogacar will finish the 2022 season in Italy at the Giro de Emilia (October 1), Tre Valli Varesine (October 4), and Il Lombardia (October 8).

Pogachal told Cycling News before the Tour de France that he had his eyes on the world championships: "A lot has happened already this year.

"The only thing I am 100% sure of at the moment is the Tour de France, nothing else."

In an interview published in the sports daily AS on Monday, Matsin strongly hinted at a change of direction, saying: "[The Vuelta] was the plan, but first I need to have a long talk with him."

In an interview with the Daily Sport, he said.

Pogachar last competed in the Vuelta in 2019, winning two stages in Andorra and Sierra de Gredos to finish third overall in his first Grand Tour.

If he had returned to the Vuelta, it would have been the first time Pogachar had run two Grand Tours in the same year. There were reports that Pogachar would attempt the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France double in 2023, but that has yet to be confirmed.
