On stage 5 of the Tour de France, Emma Norsgaard (Movistar Team) crashed heavily and had to abandon the race after a big crash with less than 45km to go.
The crash, which occurred right in front of the peloton, took down most of the main group, and although Norsgaard was able to stand after the crash, she appeared to have injured her shoulder area and experienced some unseen pain.
Norsgaard was carried off the road by ambulance shortly thereafter and abandoned.
After the stage, her Movistar team posted an update on social media, stating that she "suffered pain mainly in her head (to the point where she could not continue), cervical spine and left shoulder." Norsgaard remained at the hospital in Epinal for tests, but the team later added that there were no fractures from the crash.
Chantal van den Broek-Blaak (SDWorx) was also treated by the race medical car with a bleeding right arm and a bandage on her elbow.
Marta Bastionelli of UAE ADQ was also involved in a crash in the last 25km and was able to finish in the main group despite a visible ailment.
Norsgaard's crash is a blow to Annemiek van Vleuten's GC campaign. The Dutch team leader is currently in eighth place, 1:18 behind Marianne Vos (Jumbo-Visma), who is currently in the yellow jersey.
