The Commonwealth Games track races at London's Lee Valley VeloPark on Sunday were interrupted by a horrific crash in the qualifying round of the men's scratch race.
Olympic omnium gold medalist Matt Walls appeared to be the most seriously injured when he flew into the stands over a competitor who had fallen high on the banking. On Sunday evening, Walls was stitched up and released from the hospital with a forehead wound.
According to a statement from organizer Birmingham 2022, two spectators were injured but treated on the spot, and three riders were taken to the hospital.
"Following the crash in the men's scratch, Matt Walls and Matt Bostock are being treated by medics before being taken to hospital for further treatment," British Cycling said in a statement.
"Our sympathies go out to the riders and spectators involved in this accident.
Walls was treated for more than 30 minutes in a cordoned off area of the stands before being taken away on a stretcher. Team England said, "Matt is alert and conversant.
PA media reported that one man and one girl were treated for minor injuries.
Compatriots Derek Gee, Jamall Eastmond (Barbados), George Jackson (New Zealand), and Josh Duffy (Australia) also fell. In total, eight riders fell.
Gee rode up the wall on the banking, climbed over the railing to avoid the following wall, but slid off the course in grief. He too is being treated at the hospital.
