New Zealand's Andrews Receives Fine, Not Medal, at Commonwealth Games

Else Andrews, from New Zealand, left the Commonwealth Games with a silver medal, 200 Swiss francs and valuable UCI points, though not a gold medal.

The track sprinter was penalized for not being on the podium with her teammates at the medal ceremony for the women's team pursuit at Lee Valley VeloPark in London on Saturday.

Andrews was a late replacement in the Team Pursuit and focused on the sprint events. With only three athletes allowed to cross the line in Team Pursuit, Andrews began her ride but quickly slowed down to allow Mikaela Drummond, Emily Sherman, and Bryony Botha to duke it out with the Aussies.

Immediately following the team pursuit final, Wollaston chose not to participate in the medal ceremony, instead preparing for the team sprint gold medal race less than an hour later.

Event officials then fined her 200 Swiss francs [334 New Zealand dollars], did not give her a silver medal, and deducted her UCI points. She was not too concerned about missing out on the silver medal.

"I'm really glad I could help them keep racing ....... I'm really proud that they were able to get up there and get the silver medal,"

Andrews told New Zealand's 1News,

"The three of them are the ones who did the work, so I'm really proud that they were able to get up there and get the silver medal."

Andrews replaced Allie Wollaston, who injured her wrist in a crash on stage 2 of the Tour de France Femme while competing for the AG Insurance-NXTG team. Wollaston had abandoned the French stage race after stage 3 and was scheduled to represent New Zealand in the London track race, but was unable to continue due to injury.

Andrews, along with Aaron Gate, put his name in the record books at the Commonwealth Games. Andrews won the women's keirin, sprint, and team sprint, while Gate won the men's points race, individual pursuit, and team pursuit.

The only other New Zealand track athlete to win gold at the Commonwealth Games was Gary Anderson in 1990.

For Andrews, who finished second for New Zealand in the women's keirin at the Tokyo Olympics, the silver medal remains one of her favorite colors.
